The Schoenberg Experience is an interdisciplinary project devoted to composer Arnold Schönberg, sponsored by the Bologna Community and the Fondazione Teatro Comunale di Bologna, with contributions from the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna and a large number of Bolognese cultural institutions.

About 50 events within a two-year period, made possible by more than 20 cultural institutes in Italy and elsewhere in Europe, are focussing their  presentations on lesser-known aspects of Schönberg’s persona, along with his comparatively familiar works.

He was a composer and undisputed innovator of musical language – but he was also a painter, an inventor, a highly insightful essayist and theoretician (a touchstone for musicians of the younger generation) and a gifted pedagogue unaffiliated with any academicism. He was a thinker, a philosopher whose incorruptibility made him intellectually inconsistent, his concerns spanning music, theater and painting; he was also constantly alert to developments of new forms of artistic expression. A short while ago, UNESCO adopted his estate into its Memory of the World Register; in this sense, Bologna – a UNESCO City of Music – the perfect venue for a project devoted to him, unique the breadth of its thematic spectrum.

The Schoenberg Experience was instigated by Roberto Tarenzi, in close collaboration with the composer’s children Nuria Schoenberg Nono, Lawrence and Ronald Schoenberg, with principal support from the Fondazione Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
